Hearth and Hamlet Cathedral & Ancient Evil Guide
What the Ancient Evil arc is
Late in a run the game escalates from raiders to something the ordinary military line is not built for. In the game’s own framing, the enemies become too numerous for your mages and only divine might will turn them back - the quest instruction that follows is to build a Cathedral and use it to research consecrated weapons.
The event arrives with a large happiness penalty attached. A recorded playthrough shows Ancient Evil sitting at -40% happiness, and because happiness contributes to global production, that single modifier slows food, wood, stone, iron, gold and magic simultaneously. Runs that were comfortable can feel like they have broken in the space of a minute.
The Ancient Evil achievement is held by 41% of owners, which puts it just past the halfway mark of the game’s completion funnel.
Why it catches people out
Three things compound:
- The happiness hit is global, so the obvious symptom - everything slowing - points you at worker assignment rather than at the event.
- The Cathedral is expensive, and it unlocks a further tier of requirements; starting it from nothing while your economy is under a 40% production drag is the worst possible time.
- Consecrated weapons research sits behind the Cathedral, so the fix is two steps, not one.
Being ready before it lands
There is no way to skip the arc, so treat it as a scheduled expense:
- Bank happiness in advance. Drop taxation before the late game and let morale climb; the achievement for 200% happiness exists because high happiness is a real buffer, not a flourish.
- Have gold income running. A working trade route funds an emergency build far better than a tax spike, which would cut happiness exactly when it is already cut.
- Keep storage headroom. You will be spending in bursts and you do not want production discarded while you save up.
- Do not be mid-way through another expensive line. Finishing the Magic Academy tier first is fine; starting it as the arc begins is not.
After the Cathedral
Consecrated weapons research is what turns the fight around, and the Cathedral itself continues to serve as a happiness structure afterwards. Once the arc is resolved, the run moves into its final stage - late diplomacy, the castle and moat, then the coronation and epilogue, covered in the progression walkthrough.
