Hearth and Hamlet Magic & Witch's Mire Guide

The magic chain

Magic is the sixth resource and it arrives late on purpose. The order is:

  1. Recruit the wizard. The achievement He’s a Wizard marks this and 58.7% of owners have it, which makes the wizard a reasonable midpoint marker for a run.
  2. Build Witch’s Mire in the swamp. This is where magic production actually starts. Expect a blue-arrow quest pointing you at the swamp, and expect the build to want blueprints as well as resources.
  3. Excavate the ruins and build the Magic Academy. The Academy unlocks magical upgrades, shop items and magic storage. In the game’s framing, the wizard convinces the arch mage of Rubescairn to permit its construction - the same Rubescairn that appears as a trade destination.
  4. Alchemy and the alchemical shop, which layer potions and concoctions on top.

Just Pay It With Magic (56.4% of owners) marks the first time you spend magic as a currency, which is the point where magic stops being a curiosity and becomes part of the economy - magic is one of the six tradeable resources on the expedition screen.

Why not to rush it

The consistent verdict from players who have restarted runs: magic and alchemy are an optimisation layer, not a rescue tool. Pouring resources into the magic line while food is negative, storage is capped or workers are misassigned makes the collapse faster rather than slower, because the magic buildings are expensive and their benefits are percentages of an output that is already broken.

The prerequisites worth having before investing heavily:

  • Food in comfortable surplus, with a growing trend.
  • Storage with room in it, so production is not being discarded.
  • Basic defence handled, so a raid does not undo the investment.

With those in place, magic is genuinely strong: it amplifies production, speeds growth, reinforces defence and opens paths the resource economy cannot reach on its own.

Magic as a trade good

Magic appears in both the buy and sell columns of the expedition screen, and destination demand for it varies like any other resource. Because magic production comes online late and slowly, selling it early is usually a mistake - you will want it for Academy upgrades and shop items first. Buying magic from a destination with low demand for it, on the other hand, can shortcut the early production bottleneck.

Storage applies here too

Magic storage is its own upgrade, unlocked through the Academy. The same rule as every other resource holds: production above the cap is discarded. If your magic sits pinned at its maximum while the Academy waits on something else, either spend it or raise the ceiling.
